What happens if you eat sugar during pregnancy

A study of 9,000 mothers and their children found that if you eat sugar during pregnancy, you may cause certain allergies that will appear in children's lives as they grow older.

During pregnancy, expectant mothers have all kinds of cravings.

But there is a constant pressure to eat healthy foods and preparations because you are not only eating for yourself, but also for your child.

A study of 9,000 mothers and their children found that if you eat sugar during pregnancy, you may cause certain allergies that will appear in children’s lives as they grow older.

Why is it not good to eat sugar during pregnancy?

Sugar is found in the form of monosaccharides, such as glucose and fructose, and disaccharides, such as sucrose, which are added to food and found in syrups, honey, and unsweetened fruit juice. Basic carbohydrate sugar is also included.

Fresh vegetables and fruits can still be eaten by expectant mothers.

The study, conducted by the Queen Mary University of London and published in the European Respiratory Journal, involved 9,000 mothers and their children. It was designed to study the correlation between high sugar intake and allergies and allergic asthma in young children.

The study involved women who became pregnant around 1990 and allergies that their children developed until the age of 7.

These include asthma and common allergies, such as dust allergies. The effect was calculated in comparison with the amount of sugar, such as the sugar present in tea, coffee, and certain food groups, but the natural sugars in milk, fruit and vegetables were not tested.

When mothers who consumed high amounts of sugar during pregnancy were compared with mothers who consumed low amounts of sugar, there was an increased risk of allergies (38%) and a high risk of allergic asthma (101%). %).

Professor Seif Shaheen, who was the leader of the research team, says that we cannot deduce from these observations whether high sugar intake is the determining cause of allergies and allergic asthma.

More intensive research is needed, involving mothers from different parts of the globe, mothers who consume different types of food, to find out if high sugar intake during pregnancy is really the cause of allergies in children.

Until then, it is recommended that pregnant women continue to have a healthy and balanced diet and avoid high sugar intake.
